LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan security forces have taken complete control of Sangin district from the Taliban militants in Afghanistan's southern province of Helmand, a military source said Wednesday.
Scores of militants including several Taliban subordinate commanders have been killed and several rounds of landmines and roadside bombs have been recovered and defused during the ongoing operation launched by Afghan National Army that resulted in the full control of the restive district on Tuesday, a media official of army Corps 215 Maywand told Xinhua.
The strategic district has been the scene of heavy clashes between security forces and Taliban for long.
The official gave no details about possible casualties of civilians or security forces during the skirmishes.
The Taliban militant group has not commented on the report yet.
Afghan troops have intensified their offensive against the Taliban and other insurgent groups within past months, as the Taliban militants have been attempting to take territory and consolidate their positions during the winter in the mountainous country.
