KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Up to 15 personnel of Afghan Border Police force were killed and seven others injured in an overnight attack of anti-government militants against a security checkpoint in the border town of Spin Boldak in the southern Kandahar, an official said on the condition of anonymity on Saturday.
"Up to 15 border police personnel were killed and seven others wounded, after anti-government militants equipped with heavy weapons stormed a checkpoint in Loye Kariz area of Spinboldak district in the wee hours of Saturday," the source told Xinhua but declined to be identified, saying authorized officials would talk to media.
Meantime, an army spokesman in the southern region captain Ahmad Sadeq Eisa has confirmed that attack, but insisted no casualty was there.
However, a statement of Kandahar provincial government released here said that clash between security forces and the Taliban outfit over control of a security outpost in Spinboldak district left seven police personnel and 16 insurgents dead.
According to the statement, four security personnel and 11 insurgents were injured in the overnight firefight which lasted for a while.
