TOKYO, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Monday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index extending its run of closing highs for a seventh straight day.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 223.70 points, or 1.00 percent, from Friday to close the day at 22,574.76.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 21.60 points, or 1.30 percent, to finish at 1,689.05.
By the close of play, marine transportation, oil and coal product, and mining-linked issues comprised those that gained the most, and rising issues beat falling ones by 1,579 to 472 on the First Section, while 68 ended the day unchanged.
On the main section on Monday, 1,340.78 million shares changed hands, dropping from Friday's volume of 1,819.25 million shares.
The turnover on the first trading day of the week came to 2,430.6 billion yen (21.42 billion U.S. dollars).
