Bangladesh opens specialized institute to treat burn patients

DHAKA, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the country's largest specialized institute in Dhaka to offer better treatment facilities to patients with burn injuries.

The "Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute and Hospital" was constructed within about two and a half years at an estimated cost of 5.22 billion taka (66.6 million U.S. dollars) under the supervision of Bangladesh Army.

Officials said the 12-storey institute is a part of the Hasina government's efforts to ensure modern treatment facilities to the patients of burn injuries and train medical professionals in Bangladesh.

Addressing at the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, Hasina said the institute was equipped with most modern equipment.

She expressed the hope that it would be a center of excellence for treatment, research and studies in Bangladesh.

Officials said the institute with 500 beds, 50 intensive care unit and 12 operating theaters is the largest burn and plastic surgery institute also in the world.
