SHANGHAI, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- 13th seeded Borna Coric of Croatia claimed his first win over Swiss three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in their first round meeting on Monday at ATP Shanghai Masters, while Chinese wild card entry Wu Yibing beat his compatriot Li Zhe 7-6(5), 6-2 into second round.
In the first set, Wawrinka, the former world No. 3 and now ranked at 69, struggling to find his best after two left knee operations, got the first break to love and then held two service games strongly, sealing the set 6-4.
But Coric bounced back in the second set, he saved two breaking points and broke the decisive game to make it 6-4. In the third set, Wawrinka committed double faults and unforced errors in his serve to give Coric 3-1 advantage. Then Coric held out her serves for the rest of the set and closed out the match in one hour and 58 minutes.
Coric will face Bradley Klahn in the second round after the American knocked out Nick Kyrgios of Australia 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
China's Wu is through the second round after he beat another home favorite 32-year-old Li Zhe. The first set was nail-biter and has lasted for 61 minutes, Wu got a hard 7-6(5) win. In the second, Wu snatched break early and experienced few troubles to seal the victory.
Earlier in the day, world No. 15 Stefanos Tsitsipas struggled to win over French player Gael Monfils 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4. 14th-seeded Milos Raonic surprisingly lost 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to the 81st-ranked McDonald.
In other matches, Sam Querrey saw off ninth-seeded Diego Schwartzman in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, while Taylor Fritz overcame Robin Haase 6-3, 7-6 (3). They will meet in the next round. Enditem
