LUSAKA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's revenue agency said on Friday that it intends to review the importation procedures for ethanol following increased cases of smuggling.

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) said the smuggling of ethanol was on the rise and was being used in the illegal manufacture of highly potent local alcohols commonly known as Tujili-jili or Junta.

"The review of importation procedures for ethanol which is used to manufacturer illicit alcohol will protect the vulnerable youths who are more prone to the abuse of illicit drugs and alcohol, "Topsy Sikainda, the revenue agency's spokesperson, said.

The agency, he said, further intends to carry out random and extensive inspections of companies and individuals suspected to be involved in tax evasion through the manufacturing of illicit alcohol.

Zambia has seen an increase in the manufacture of the potent illicit alcohols which were being abused by young people.

There have been reports of deaths after excessive intake of illicit alcohols.
