RIO DE JANEIRO, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Atletico Tucuman survived for almost an hour with 10 men on Thursday to earn a 0-0 draw with hosts Libertad and secure a berth in the Copa Libertadores knockout phase.
The visitors lost goalkeeper Alejandro Sanchez when he was shown a straight red card for a rash challenge in the 39th minute at Leoz stadium in Paraguayan capital Asuncion.
But the hosts were unable to capitalize on their numerical advantage as the Argentine side secured the point they needed to finish second in Group C and progress to the last 16.
Libertad topped the group with four wins and a draw from their six matches, finishing three points ahead of Tucuman.
Meanwhile, Uruguay's Penarol were eliminated despite a 2-0 home victory over Bolivia's the Strongest.
Cristian Palacios and Cristian Rodriguez scored first-half goals before Penarol midfielder Franco Martinez was sent off just after the hour mark for a bad tackle.
Penarol finished third in Group C, a point behind Tucuman, while the Strongest were last with just three points.
