TEHRAN, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Tehran is working closely with Damascus to reduce violence in the rebel-held city of Ghouta in Syria, Iran Daily reported on Friday.

"We are trying to see how we can de-escalate this new tension," Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi was quoted as saying.

"We want to assist people on the ground who are suffering from this conflict," Araqchi said on Friday.

Airstrikes by the Syrian government continued on the Ghouta near Syria's capital on Friday.

The United Nations (UN) Security Council will meet on the day to consider a resolution demanding a 30-day humanitarian ceasefire across the Middle East country.

Iran, a close ally of Syria, has played a major role in the war against militants in the country.

Iranian officials have said that Iran would keep up its advisory assistance to the Syrian government until full elimination of terrorism.
